Abstract

This study is about the morality reflected in D.J. Salinger’s Catcher in the Rye (1951). Morality is the quality of actions which with that actions we can judge that it is good or bad, true or false. The purposes of this study are (1) to explain how morality is depicted by Holden Caulfield in J.D. Salinger's Catcher in the Rye, (2) to describe the morality structure reflected in Catcher in the Rye, (3) to explain how Holden Caulfield viewing morality in Catcher in the Rye. The researcher uses descriptive qualitative method to analyzing the study. In this study, the researcher uses two kinds of data sources: primary data sources and secondary data sources. The technique of data collection is used by using library research and taking note method. The researcher uses the psychology analysis theory from Sigmund Freud and the moral development theory from Lawrence Kohlberg. The result of this study shows it that the main character, Holden Caulfield did some moral deviation because his personality on viewing the society. He views the society is full of hypocrisy and artificiality. And it cause his moral development is inhibited.
