Abstract

Kukup Beach, Gunungkidul once had a marine aquarium facility that became an icon of regional educational tourism, but has now been abandoned and not functioning for more than a decade. This condition has resulted in the loss of marine biota conservation education facilities for tourists, while the southern coastal ecosystem of Gunungkidul faces the threat of degradation due to tourism pressure, marine biota fishing activities, and climate change. This design aims to produce a marine conservation aquarium concept at Kukup Beach that accommodates marine biota conservation, education, and research activities in an integrated manner, by applying sustainable architectural principles so that the building is responsive to the characteristics of the karst coastal environment, while also restoring the identity of Kukup Beach as a special interest/educational tourist destination. The design method used is descriptive-qualitative, including literature studies, studies of similar building precedents, as well as analysis of the site, potential, and problems of the area, which are then synthesized into an architectural design concept. The design results in an aquarium concept with a total building area of 14,890.5 m2, consisting of various tank shapes (square, cylindrical, tunnel, panoramic, and touch pool) that are adapted to the character of the biota and spatial zoning. The implementation of sustainable architecture is realized through a double-skin facade and Low-E glass as a climate response, a closed Life Support System (LSS) system for water conservation, the use of environmentally friendly local materials, cross ventilation and zenithal skylights for passive thermal-visual comfort, and solar panels as a renewable energy source. This design is expected to be a model for sustainable marine conservation facilities while revitalizing the educational tourism identity of Kukup Beach.
