Abstract
Background: Lower extremity fractures are among the most common types of fractures and can be classified into open and closed fractures. The type of fracture is influenced by several factors, including body mass index (BMI), age, and sex. However, previous studies regarding the correlations between these factors and fracture type have shown inconsistent results. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the correlations between body mass index, age, and sex with fracture type in lower extremities. Method: This study used an analytic observational design with a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 130 patients with lower extremity fractures at Soeharso Orthopedic Hospital Surakarta selected using purposive sampling. Data were obtained from medical records during January–March 2026. Data analysis was performed using Chi-square tests for bivariate analysis and logistic regression for multivariate analysis. Results: Most respondents had open fractures (79.2%), normal BMI (53.1%), were aged <60 years (53.8%), and were female (58.5%). Bivariate analysis showed that BMI (p=0.170), age (p=0.188), and sex (p=0.573) were not significantly associated with lower extremity fracture type. Multivariate analysis showed that overweight BMI had an aOR of 1.875 with a 95% CI of 0.761–4.617, however, both variables were not statistically significant (p>0.05). Conclusion: Body mass index, age, and sex were not significantly associated with lower extremity fracture type. However, patients with overweight BMI tended to have a higher risk of experiencing open fractures.
