Abstract

This study aims to 1) identify characterization of Phileas Fogg viewed from personality traits theory by Costa and McCrae. 2) analyze how characterization of Phileas Fogg presented in the novel titled Around the World in Eighty Days. The study used the psychological approach. The method of this study was qualitative research that focused on Phileas Fogg’s characterization in the novel by analyzing the dialogues, monologues, and the narration by the author. The study found that Phileas Fogg had strong value in Conscientiousness, Agreeableness and Openness to Experience while he had low value in other two personality traits. The study concluded that Phileas Fogg is the protagonist and the main character of the novel. Phileas Fogg also a major character who had deep background stories which qualified him as a round character. The changes in Phileas Fogg in the novel qualifies him as a dynamic character.
