Abstract

This study discusses the difficulties students have when speaking English at SMP N 4 Karanganyar. This is a qualitative descriptive study. This study's participants were the second grade students from SMP N 4 Karanganyar. The purpose of this study is to find out what problems students face when speaking English and how do students overcome difficulties in speaking English. In collecting data, researchers applied observation, interview, and document. The results of this study indicate that the problems faced by students are vocabulary problems, pronunciation problems, grammar problems, fluency problems, anxiety problems and shyness problems. The strategies used by students in solving the trust problem were: memorizing through social media YouTube, online dictionaries, watching English subtitled movies, practicing a lot in front of the mirror to build themselves up, listening to music, practicing using English exercise books and asking other people who more understand.
