Abstract
Indonesia possesses a rich diversity of cultural heritage; however, the rapid flow of globalization has threatened the preservation of local cultures, including those in Banten Province. As the capital city of Banten Province, Serang City holds significant cultural assets, such as Debus performances, Banten batik, Baduy traditions, and historical relics of the Banten Sultanate. Nevertheless, the city still lacks a representative cultural center capable of accommodating cultural preservation and development activities. This study aims to (1) determine a strategic and suitable site for the design of the Banten Cultural Center in Serang City and (2) develop an architectural design that represents local cultural identity through a Contextual Architecture approach. The research method includes field observation, literature review, and precedent studies of cultural facilities. The selected site is located on Syekh Moh. Nawawi Albantani Street, Curug District, covering an area of approximately 21,000 m² and situated near the Sultan Maulana Hasanuddin State Islamic University of Banten. The design concept applies contextual architectural principles through clustered building masses surrounding a central plaza as the main communal space, the use of a secondary skin inspired by Baduy batik motifs, and roof forms adapted from traditional Banten architecture. The facility is designed to function as a center for cultural preservation, art performances, exhibitions, and educational activities. The proposed design is expected to become a center for the preservation and development of Banten culture while serving as an architectural landmark that reflects the environmental, cultural, and historical identity of Serang City.
