Abstract

The development of cultural tourism in Lasem has shown a significant increase, supported by its multicultural character formed through the interaction of Javanese, Chinese, and Islamic cultures, which are reflected in its social life, traditions, and architectural heritage. However, this potential has not been adequately supported by facilities that provide proper information, orientation, and spatial experience for visitors. Therefore, the design of an Intercultural center as a cultural tourism gateway in Lasem is proposed using a synthesis architecture approach, which integrates functions of information, education, and cultural interaction into a unified spatial system. The design method is conducted through stages of problem identification, data collection, analysis, and concept synthesis, covering aspects of site conditions, user activities, spatial requirements, and cultural characteristics of the area. The resulting design concept is manifested in spatial planning, zoning, and building form and massing that reflect contextual cultural interactions. The Intercultural center is expected to serve as an initial point of tourist orientation as well as a representation of Lasem’s cultural identity, providing an educational, interactive, and recreational space while supporting the development of Lasem as a sustainable cultural tourism destination.
