Abstract

The Sangiran Area is a prehistoric archaeological site of international significance that has been designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1996. Despite its high Outstanding Universal Value (OUV), tourism activities in the area are still dominated by conservation functions and passive museum exhibitions. The main issue is the lack of facilities capable of integrating local cultural potentials, such as stone crafts, weaving, and batik, into a comprehensive tourism system, resulting in a low tourist length of stay. This design aims to formulate an experience tourism concept, design interactive and educational facilities based on local culture, and apply a Neo-Vernacular architectural approach that is contextual to the landscape and local values. The methods used include observation, literature review, interviews, and comparative studies. The design concept integrates educational, creative economic, socio-cultural, and participatory recreational functions. The Neo-Vernacular approach is implemented through the reinterpretation of traditional Javanese architecture into contemporary forms that respond to site and environmental conditions. The design is expected to sustainably revitalize Sangiran’s cultural heritage, enhance the local economy, and provide an authentic and memorable tourism experience.
