Abstract
The surface quality resulting from the CNC milling process is a key factor influencing the success of anodizing on 6061 aluminum. This study aims to investigate the surface roughness values of 6061 aluminum in its raw state, after CNC milling, and after anodizing. An experimental method was employed, involving CNC milling followed by anodizing; surface roughness was then measured at three points on each specimen, and average values were calculated based on Ra, Rq, and Rz parameters. Test results indicate that the raw material had average roughness values of Ra 0.692 µm, Rq 0.920 µm, and Rz 5.066 µm. After machining, the 4-flute end mill produced lower roughness values (Ra 0.460 µm; Rq 0.572 µm; Rz 2.978 µm) compared to the 2-flute end mill (Ra 1.150 µm; Rq 1.406 µm; Rz 6.382 µm). Following the anodizing process, the 4-flute end mill continued to yield lower surface roughness values (Ra 0.521 µm, Rq 0.668 µm, and Rz 3.728 µm) compared to the 2-flute end mill (Ra 0.543 µm, Rq 0.720 µm, and Rz 4.340 µm). Thus, the 4-flute end mill is more effective at producing superior surface quality on 6061 aluminum, both before and after anodizing. However, the 4-flute tool requires periodic inspection to prevent chip clogging caused by the narrower chip evacuation space.
