Abstract
Schools are not merely places for learning or for the exchange of knowledge between educators and students; rather, they are spaces that shape how children think, feel, and grow. The physical environment of a school plays a significant role in influencing children’s psychological conditions as well as their ability to respond to their surroundings. However, most schools in Indonesia still adopt conventional design approaches that do not adequately consider students’ mental health. In Sukoharjo Regency, there are approximately 409 school buildings, nearly half of which are severely damaged due to aging. Additionally, school facilities and infrastructure have not fully met the standards outlined in Permendikbudristek No. 22 of 2023. In 2025, only 51,954 children were enrolled in school out of a total of 128,698 children aged 5–14. The majority of out-of-school children are affected by economic constraints and anxiety related to the school environment. Ideally, schools should function as safe spaces for elementary-aged children; however, in many cases, they have instead become sources of distress. Incidents of violence frequently occur within school environments, involving not only students who struggle to express their identity but also, in some cases, educators. This study proposes a transformation in elementary school design—from merely a place of learning into an integrated environment that supports children’s cognitive and emotional development. It aims to create a healthy and safe school environment through a neuroarchitecture approach, a design method that integrates natural elements and spatial flexibility to reduce stress and promote children’s overall well-being.
