Abstract

Narrative texts in Indonesian lessons are written by students which contain many errors, because students write using their own language without paying attention to spelling. The aim of this research is to determine the forms of spelling errors in the narrative texts of Salatiga State MTS students. This research is a type of qualitative research using descriptive methods. The primary data in this research are documents in the form of narrative texts written by class VII MTS Negeri Salatiga students. The secondary data is informants from Indonesian language teachers and from relevant research on the same topic. The data source was obtained from a narrative text written by class VII MTS Negeri Salatiga students. The data collection techniques used were interviews, documents and literature study. The data analysis technique in this research uses five stages using the error analysis method proposed by Ellis, namely collecting error samples, identifying errors, explaining errors, clarifying errors, and evaluating errors. The results of this research were that from 21 data there were 40 spelling errors in Indonesian, including 17 errors in writing capital letters, 13 errors in writing words, and 10 errors in writing punctuation. There are four strategies to improve students' understanding of Indonesian spelling, namely facilitating students to write routinely, routine quizzes, interactive learning, and the use of technology
