Abstract

This study aims to analyze students' reflective thinking in solving set problems based on Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) in terms of Field Independent (FI) cognitive style and Field Dependent (FD) cognitive style. The type of this research is descriptive qualitative research. The subject of this study is seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Rembang. The methods of data collection used consist of written test and interview. The methods of data analysis used are data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing and verification. The validity of the data is obtained using triangulation technique, namely comparing test result data and interview data. The result of the study shows that field independent subject is able to fulfill all the indicators of reflective thinking according to Surbeck (1991), namely reacting, elaborating, and contemplating. Field dependent subject is only able to fulfill the reacting indicator. Meanwhile, the elaborating and contemplating indicators are not fulfilled. Therefore, it can be concluded that students with field independent cognitive style are more optimal insolving HOTS-based mathematical problems compared to students with field dependent cognitive style.
