Abstract
This research aims to describe the problem-solving ability of grade X vocational students in solving matrix problems. The study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with grade X students at one of the state vocational schools in Boyolali Regency, Central Java, Indonesia. Subjects are selected by the purposive sampling technique. Research instruments consist of test questions and interview guidelines. Data is obtained through tests, interviews, and documentation. With triangulation methods and data analysis that include data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion withdrawal got results that show that: 1) students with a low level of problem-solving ability can go through all four stages of problem-solving well, 2) students with a moderate level of problem-solving ability are experiencing obstacles in the second stage and do not carry out the fourth stage, and 3) low-skilled students are only the first stage that can be done correctly, The second and third stages are experiencing obstacles, while the fourth stage cannot be done. The four stages in question are the stages of problem-solving according to Polya, which include: 1) understanding the problem, 2) devising a plan, 3) carrying out the plan, and 4) looking back. The results of this study can be used as evaluation material to improve students' problem-solving skills, especially in math subjects.
