Abstract

Refusal is a condition when the listener does not do the expected response, people generally use the word 'no' for the speaker's statement. This study aims to identify and describe the types of refusal and strategies of refusal so that there are no misunderstandings and impoliteness in refusing. This study used a qualitative descriptive method, the writer used a conversation script for the Ginny & Georgia series and To All the Boys movie. Data collection used documentation techniques with the following steps: watching movies and reading film scripts, underlining keywords and then writing it down. The researcher analyzed every utterance of the characters and scripts in the film series according to Beebe's theory. The results showed eight types of refusal found by the researcher in the categories refusal of request, refusal of offer, refusal of suggestion and refusal of invitation. While in the strategies of refusal, the writer found ten strategies of refusal in the categories direct of refusal, indirect of refusal and adjunct of refusal.
