Abstract

This study described the implementation of the Scientific Approach in teaching reading comprehension at the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 1 Sukodono Sragen. This study aimed to identify and describe the application of a scientific approach in reading comprehension learning faced by teachers and students in the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 1 Sukodono Sragen. The subjects of this study are English teachers and some students at eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Sukodono Sragen. This study used a qualitative method. The research method used by interview, observation, and documentation. This study found that the scientific approach is a concept in which a teacher is only a facilitator and student-centered. Scientific approach can build students' abilities in solve a problem, train students to express opinions or communicate ideas and can also develop student character and also the process of teaching and learning English in junior high school must be able to carry out productively while teaching and learning process in the classroom. The teachers and students' role in Scientific Approach, students’ roles means that the students’ as the subject of learning to do activities in observing and then asking the questions, collecting information, processing information and then communicating. Teacher roles are to motivate the students and also guide the students. As for the obstacles faced by teachers and students of SMP Negeri 1 Sukodono Sragen in applying the scientific approach, students have difficulty understanding unfamiliar words and performing their reading comprehension. Managing time in practicing all learning material in class is also an obstacle faced by teachers and students. In the end, this research is expected to be useful for English teachers, readers, and schools to obtain information and to develop the quality of education.
