Abstract

This study aims to describe the error analysis based on Newman's procedure in solving HOTS questions in terms of students' cognitive styles divided into Field Dependent and Field Independent. This type of research is descriptive qualitative research. The subjects in this study were students of class VIII F of SMP Negeri 1 Grogol. Data collection techniques used by the GEFT test, SPLDV test questions, interviews, and documentation. The data analysis technique used is reducing data, presenting data, and drawing conclusions. Error based on Newman procedure of class VIII F students in solving the story problem of the Linear Equation System of Two Variables between students who have cognitive style dependent fields and independent fields have differences. From the five stages of error Newman understands, transforms, carries out the process of completion, writing the final answer is often done by students who have a field dependent cognitive style. Whereas the Newman error stage carries out the completion process, writing the final answer is often done by students who have an independent field cognitive style. Errors based on the Newman Field Dependent cognitive style procedure make more mistakes than the Independent Field cognitive style.
