Abstract

This research aims to describe the types of errors and causes made by students in solving the problem material for the Two Variable Linear Equation System based on the Newman Error Analysis (NEA) in class VIII of SMP Negeri 3 Sawit. The subject used in this study was class VIII A SMP Negeri 3 Sawit in the 2019/2020 school year. Data collection techniques using the method of tests, interviews, and documentation. Data validity uses triangulation of sources and techniques. Data analysis techniques using data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion making. The results of this study indicate that: (1) reading errors 4.44%, sstudents incorrectly read important information in the questions, (2) comprehension error 5%, students do not write in full what is known and asked by the questions,, (3) transformation errors 14.45%, students do not write mathematical models, and wrong in making examples so that the written mathematical equations are also wrong, (4) process skill errors 38, 33%, students wrong in calculating the next process is also wrong and some students do not work to completion, and (5) encoding error 37.78%, students have written the conclusions correctly but the final results are written incorrectly due to previous process errors. Factors causing these errors are students who lack mastery of the material, are confused, forget to write, do not like arithmetic, inaccurate, and in a hurry in working on the problems.
