Abstract
This study aims to describe the errors and causes of errors students made in solving word-context problems in the topic of algebraic form. The analysis was conducted based on Newman’s Error Analysis which consists of five stages, namely reading, unclearstanding, transformation, process skills, and encoding errors. This is a qualitative descriptive study involving all students of grade VII A2 at MTs N 2 Surakarta academic year 2018/2019. Data collection methods used by researchers are tests, interview methods, and documentation. The data analysis technique used is by data reduction, data review, and conclusion drawing. The results of this study indicate that students' mistakes in solving story problems in algebraic form are: (1) reading errors 0%, (2) unclearstanding errors 29,825%, (3) transformation errors 64,912%, (4) process skill errors 74,438%, and (5) encoding errors 96,491%. The causes of these errors are students who lack mastery of the material, students are not careful, students do not check again, and bad habits students do not write conclusions.
