Abstract

This study aims to describe students' errors and to analyze factors causing the mistakes of class VII students of MTs Negeri Surakarta II in solving the set story problem. The type of this research is descriptive qualitative. Subjects used in this study are class VII A1 MTs Negeri Surakarta II. Data collection techniques include interviews and documentation. The validity of data used is triangulation technique. Data analysis techniques through data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions or verification. The result of the research shows that (1) the error of reading is not found in this research, the misunderstanding is not writing what is known and asked about the problem of the set and the students have not understood the symbols on the set matter that is the joint symbol and the slice, using the appropriate set formula, the process error is confused in the steps used to solve the problem of the set story, and the error of drawing the conclusion is to write a conclusion with no care and not accustomed in writing conclusions. (2) factors that cause the mistake is low students understanding, especially on the combined mathematical symbols and slices, less accustomed to solve the problem of the set story, and the difficulty of changing the story into a mathematical language, students forget and confused in using the right formula, -a fast and lacking in calculating skills, as well as unaccustomed and inadequate in writing conclusions.
