Abstract
This research aims to describe how portfolio assessments in the implementation of portfolio in learning mathemathics in SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Kartasura. The research was about the preparation, the process and the obstacles that was faced in implementation of portfolio assessments. This research was a descriptive qualitative research with a total subject of 12 students. Data collection techniques used were interview method, observastion method and documentation method. Data was processed by triangulation method, with the first step was data reduction, then data presentation, then confirmation and conclusion. Processing data was the result of comparation between the result of intervieww, observation and documentation so that the result obtained are not conflicting. Preparation must to carrying out before implementing portfolio assessment is preparing instructional tools, instuments and format of assessment. Implementation of the assessment is done by learning process as first step, next collecting values process, confirmation of students difficulties process and the last is determining the portfolio values. The challenges faced in the portfolio assessment are time constraints, the unequal ratio of teacher dan students, and the cooperation of students. In addition the research find that assessment using portfolio can improve the result of stusent’s learnin, both in cognitive (knowledge) and in affective ability.
