Abstract

The study aims to describe (1) the structure of the Pasung Jiwa novel by Okky Madasari, (2) the social criticism in it, and (3) the implementation of the results of the research work of the novel as literary materials in high school. The natureof this research is qualitative descriptive research. The object of this research is the words and sentences which containing a message of social criticism in the the Pasung Jiwa novel. Data collection techniques used in this research is the literature, observe, and record. The validity technique of the data used in this research is the triangular resources technique. Data analysis techniques used in this research is the technique of dialectic. The results of the analysis can be summed up as follows. First, based on the structural analysi, the novel's theme is social life of a transgender. The main character named Sasana and subordinates, i.e. Sasana’s mother, Sasana’s father, and Cak Jek. The flow of the story is advanced flow (progre ssive). The setting is divided into three part: the place setting located in Malang, Medan, Surabaya, Jakarta and Batam. Second; the time setting occurred between 1993 to 1999; social background and recounts the life of someone who wanted to be free from pressure. Second, the social criticism in the the Pasung Jiwa novel by Okky Madasari aresuch as issues of politics, economy, culture, security, defence and law. Third, the results of this research are implemented as literary materials in high school based on the SK 7 i.e. understand the various saga, Indonesian novel or translations and KD 7.2 i.e. analyze the intrinsic and extrinsic elements of Indonesian novels or translations.
