Abstract

This research is conducted to achieve some objectives, they are to describe: (1) the procedure of teaching speaking by using problem solving activities to raising students’ motivation; (2) the result of teaching speaking by using problem solving activities for the second year of senior high school; and (3) the strength and weakness of teaching speaking by using problem solving activities. The method used in this study is action research method. The research was conducted on May 28th, 2007. The subject of the study is the second year students of SMAN Kebakkramat Karanganyar. The data analysis was started by describing the procedures of teaching speaking by using problem solving activities to raising the students’ motivation, describing the result of teaching speaking by using problem solving activities, describing the strength and weakness. The result of the study shows that teaching speaking by using problem solving activities is suitable for teenage students. Teaching speaking by using problem solving activities is able to improve students’ motivation from low confident, passive and bore, to be more active, motivated and confident to speak English.
