Abstract
Computational thinking ability is considered an essential skill for young generations in the 21st century. This research explores high school students' computational abilities in relation to their cognitive styles. Using a qualitative approach with a case study design, this research was conducted in a public high school in Karanganyar, Central Java. Data collection utilized cognitive learning style questionnaires, computational thinking ability tests, and interview guidelines. A total of 60 tenth grade students participated in this study, with five students (three with field independent learning styles and two with field dependent learning styles) then selected for further analysis. The results show that both field independent and field dependent subjects were able to break down complex problems into simpler ones and identify important information to solve the problems. However, field dependent subjects were unable to use this information to correctly solve some of the presented problems. Field independent subjects were better at recognizing patterns and designing systematic steps to solve problems accurately. Field dependent subjects had difficulty recognizing patterns when presented in different contexts and experienced some difficulty in designing systematic steps to solve problems accurately. Thus, it can be concluded that differences in cognitive styles influence one's computational thinking ability, particularly in the indicators of pattern recognition, algorithmic thinking, and abstraction.
