Abstract

The objectives of this study are (1) to describe the effective and efficient implementation of the School Literacy Movement (GLS) at Gonilan 02 State Elementary School, (2) to describe the strategy of building reading and writing skills through the School Literacy Movement (GLS), (3) to describe the obstacles, challenges and effects of the School Literacy Movement on reading and writing skills, and (4) to evaluate the success of the School Literacy Movement on the interest in reading and writing of Gonilan 02 State Elementary School students. This type of research is phenomenological qualitative, this research was conducted at Gonilan 02 State Elementary School, the object of research on the School Literacy Movement as a strengthening in Reading and Writing Skills in Elementary Schools. The data were collected using observation, interviews and documentation. The collected data were analysed with three steps of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The result of this study is that the School Literacy Movement has been implemented at Gonilan 02 State Elementary School since 2022, starting from grades 1-6. The implementation of the Literacy Movement at Gonilan 02 State Elementary School is due to several factors, namely the low interest and reading of students and the lack of parental attention and guidance in reading and writing. In addition, the implementation of the School Literacy Movement is able to achieve the goal of improving literacy culture with maximum results through KoPer (Literacy Care Group). Strategies in building the School Literacy Movement are reading and writing skills, including reading books, textbooks, storybooks or literature, magazine books, digital books, discussions, and multimodal literacy materials. In addition, in this activity can be through KoPer (Literacy Care Group), KoPer provides a solution to build students' strategies in reading and writing skills so that with KoPer participants are accustomed to reading and writing skills. Barriers in implementing KoPer (Literacy Care Group) include limited resources, lack of time, variations in students' abilities, lack of family support, lack of teacher training. Challenges in the school literacy movement include student motivation and interest, quality and relevance of reading materials, involvement in literacy activities and use of technology. The effects of the school literacy movement are improved reading skills, improved writing skills, critical and analytical thinking skills, reading and writing habits. The success of the repositioning of the school literacy movement is through the programme implemented by Gonilan 02 State Elementary School, namely KoPer (Literacy Care Group). Through this KoPer activity, students experience changes and habits from never reading to students' interest in reading and writing has increased significantly. This activity is also evidenced by the results of students' education report cards from 37.11 to 96.67.
