Abstract
Nickel plating using the electroplating method is one of the improvement efforts physical and mechanical properties to increase strength, corrosion resistance, and the aesthetic appearance of the surface. In the electroplating process, the dipping time varies is an important parameter because it can influence the rate of nickel deposition on gray cast iron surface. The aim of this research is to find out the effect of variations in dipping time on the nickel layer of the electroplating method on roughness and surface hardness of gray cast iron. Variations in dipping time used in this research were 60, 75, and 90 minutes at a strong current of 5 Ampere and 12 Volt electricity voltage. Test results show that the process electroplating layers of nickel with time variations may affect the value. The roughness and hardness values of the specimens are not influenced by the roughness values specimen surface. The roughness value of raw materials has decreased which is very significant in the 60 minute dipping time variation from 4.504875 µm to 1.439125 microns. Meanwhile, the dipping time variation of 75 minutes increased the roughness value is 2.21875 µm and at a variation of 90 minutes of dipping time the reduction in roughness value is 1.788125 µm. Other results show that the hardness value of the specimen is not influenced by the surface roughness value specimen, this is proven by the highest roughness value in the coating results with a dipping time variation of 75 minutes does not have a high hardness value namely 84.2 HRB. The highest hardness value was obtained in the coating specimen with a variation of 90 minutes of dipping time with a hardness value of 85.53 HRB.
