Abstract
This research aims to: (1) describe the structure of the novel Falling Leaves Never Hate the Wind Tere Liye's work, (2) describes the main character's self-defense mechanism in the novel Falling Leaves Never Hate the Wind Tere Liye's work, (3) describes the relevance of the main character's self-defense mechanisms in the novel Falling Leaves Never Hate the Wind Tere Liye's work relates to literature learning in high school. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach. The data in this study consist of dialogue, clauses, sentences, and paragraphs that demonstrate the main character's self-defense 2 mechanisms in the novel Falling Leaves Never Hate the WindThe work of Tere Liye, published by Sabak Grip Publishers, fifth edition, 2023, and the results of interviews with Indonesian language teachers. The data source is the novel Falling Leaves Never Hate the Wind The work of Tere Liye and Indonesian language teachers. The data collection techniques applied in this study were close reading and interviews. The data analysis technique used interactive data analysis techniques and the principles of hermeneutic circle. The results of the study indicate that there are building structures that strengthen the storyline, such as themes, characters and characterization, plot, and setting that deepen the characters and psychological states of the characters. The results of the analysis regarding the main character's self-defense mechanisms in this novel include repression, reaction formation, rationalization, and sublimation based on Sigmund Freud's theory. Furthermore, this novel has the potential to be used as a literary learning in high school and meets the criteria for selecting teaching materials based on linguistic aspects, psychological aspects, and cultural background aspects. Thus, this research is expected to contribute to the development of literary psychology studies and the use of novels as alternative teaching materials in literary learning in high school.
