Abstract
The Solo-Ngawi Toll Road requires Rest Areas (TIPs) as vital safety mitigation infrastructure to reduce the risk of driver fatigue. However, the existing condition of the KM 519B Rest Area is not yet able to optimally accommodate this recovery function. A Post-Occupancy Evaluation (EPH) identified several spatial dysfunctions, such as the location of worship facilities adjacent to noisy vehicle traffic and the lack of Green Open Space (RTH), which triggers the phenomenon of local heating (Urban Heat Island). The dominance of asphalt and concrete pavements in the arid microclimate causes buildings to rely heavily on artificial ventilation systems, leading to a surge in operational energy consumption. Addressing these issues, this design aims to redesign the KM 519B Rest Area that integrates rest, worship, and commercial needs for travelers through a Green Architecture approach. The design method was carried out through data collection stages that included field observations, literature studies, and precedent studies, which were then processed through a comprehensive analysis of the site, building function, user behavior, space requirements, form, structure, and utility systems. The results of this analysis culminated in a design concept that hierarchically separates vehicle movement zones (noisy zones) from worship and rest facility zones (quiet zones). Ecological architectural interventions were implemented through adaptive building envelope design, the use of passive cooling systems, cross-ventilation, and the integration of shade vegetation as thermal and acoustic buffers. Through this design, the rest area is not only transformed into an energy-efficient and microclimate-responsive transit space, but also into a restorative environment that accommodates the holistic physical, psychological, and spiritual recovery process for travelers.
