Abstract

The karst landscape of Gunung Kidul possesses significant geological, hydrological, ecological, and tourism value, however, public understanding of its characteristics and conservation remains limited. This condition highlights the need for an educational facility capable of connecting scientific knowledge with contextual learning experiences. This study aims to design a Karst Interpretation Center as a facility for education, interpretation, recreation, and public activities through a nature-based architectural approach. The research employs a qualitative descriptive case study using literature review, precedent studies, site observation, and secondary data analysis to formulate the design concept. The proposed design integrates the Nature of the Space approach to create spatial experiences through the patterns of prospect, refuge, mystery, and risk/peril, while the Experiential Landscape approach organizes learning experiences that are closely connected to the characteristics of the karst landscape. These approaches produce an interpretation center that not only communicates knowledge about karst environments but also strengthens the relationship between people, space, and nature to encourage long-term environmental awareness and conservation.
