Abstract
The mangrove ecosystems along the coast of Rembang Regency play a vital role in maintaining environmental balance. They have been designated as Essential Ecosystem Areas, specifically in the villages of Tireman and Pasarbanggi, and the Pasarbanggi Village area has been designated as a mangrove conservation area pursuant to Rembang Regency Local Regulation No. 2 of 2023 concerning the Rembang Regency Spatial Plan for 2023 –2043, Paragraph 7, Article 43, Section A. This study aims to analyze the distribution, changes in area, and density of mangroves in Rembang Regency from 2020 to 2024 using Sentinel-2A imagery. Mangrove classification was performed using a supervised Random Forest algorithm, with distribution determined by the Nearest Neighbor Analys (NNA), while the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) was used to determine mangrove density using a quantitative descriptive method based on remote sensing. The results show that mangroves in Rembang Regency are distributed across the subdistricts of Kaliori, Rembang, Lasem, Sluke, Kragan, and Sarang. Accuracy tests yielded an overall accuracy of 0.94 and a Kappa coefficient of 0.82, both of which are considered high. The area of mangroves in Rembang Regency increased from 122.69 ha in 2020 to 225 ha in 2022, then decreased to 179.87 ha in 2024. Mangrove density is predominantly in the sparse class, while the moderate and dense classes tend to be concentrated in coastal areas and river estuaries, particularly in the subdistricts of Kaliori, Rembang, and Lasem. Thus, mangroves in Rembang Regency exhibit a clustered distribution pattern, the mangrove area changed from 122.69 ha in 2020 to 179.87 ha in 2024, and the density class is dominated by the sparse class, necessitating monitoring and sustainable management to preserve the mangroves.
