Abstract
The Parapat region, as a primary tourism hub for Lake Toba, faces a gap between high tourist visitation and a lack of representative cultural facilities. Despite possessing rich Batak cultural potential, the representation of local architecture remains limited to the visual appearance of the rumah bolon roof, lacking deep exploration of spatial aspects and philosophical values. This study aims to design the Neo-Bolon Batak Museum, which serves as a space for cultural interpretation as well as an architectural landmark for the Parapat region. The design employs a parametric architecture approach to transform elements of the Rumah Bolon (specifically roof proportions, column structural modules, gorga ornament patterns, and communal spatial hierarchies) into a measurable and adaptive design system. Utilizing Rhinoceros and Grasshopper software, geometric exploration was conducted systematically while maintaining the Batak Toba cultural identity. The site was selected on the hills of Tiga Raja Village with a direct orientation toward Lake Toba to maximize the visual connection between the museum's interior spaces and the surrounding landscape. The resulting design yields a museum with a total program area of 10,082 m², encompassing exhibition zones (The Roots, The Life Cycle, The Sensory Hub, Hall of Legends), an auditorium, public areas, and supporting facilities. The form concept integrates a fluid shell roof as an iconic silhouette, structured through a parametric system for spatial and material efficiency. This approach demonstrates that parametric architecture can be an effective tool in transforming local cultural heritage into contemporary buildings that are responsive, functional, and meaningful for the region.
