Abstract

Grenggeng Village, Karanganyar District, Kebumen Regency, has diverse agricultural and livestock potentials, including rice, pandan, maggot, cattle, goats, and poultry, which have not yet been optimally accommodated as a means of representing the village’s local potential. This design aims to develop an educational agro-tourism area that integrates agriculture, livestock, education, and tourism within a sustainable architectural framework. The design applies three sustainability pillars, namely environmental, economic, and social, through the implementation of Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD), Black Soldier Fly (BSF) maggot bioconversion, aquaponics, waste management, and the use of local materials such as bamboo, wood, straw, and thatch. The 26,248.04 m² site is organized into six main zones: reception, educational livestock, educational agriculture, aquaponics, BSF maggot bioconversion, and recreation and cultural arts. The building masses adopt an organic form inspired by the metaphor of a bundle of rice as a representation of local identity, with open structures and natural materials responsive to the tropical climate. The design demonstrates that Grenggeng Educational Agro-tourism can function as a medium for representing local potential while providing a space for sustainable agricultural education and supporting the local economy.
