Abstract
Background: Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease that causes the accumulation of bacterial plaque such as Porphyromonas gingivalis that damages the supporting tissues of the teeth. The prevalence of periodontal disease in children in Indonesia is still quite high, while children's anxiety towards conventional dental care often becomes a barrier for children to get treatment. Therefore, preventive solutions that are preferred by children are needed, such as functional candies based on erythritol and licorice root extract (Glycyrrhiza glabra), which have antimicrobial and anti-biofilm properties. Research purposes: This study aims to determine the inhibitory efficacy of erythritol and licorice root extract candies on the growth of Porphyromonas gingivalis bacteria. Method: The study design used was a laboratory experiment with a quantitative descriptive approach. Samples were tested using the well diffusion method with varying concentrations of licorice root extract of 0%; 2%; 3.8%; 7.4%; 13.8%. Results and discussion: All concentrations of the combination of erythritol and licorice root extract in the candies did not show inhibitory activity against Porphyromonas gingivalis bacteria. This is evidenced by the absence of an inhibition zone (0 mm in diameter) around the wells in all sample groups. Conclusion: No antibacterial activity was found by licorice root extract with 0%; 2%; 3,8%; 7,4%; 13,8% concentration in erythritol candy against Porphyromonas gingivalis.
