Abstract

The Surakarta agglomeration region is currently facing an aging population phenomenon, with the elderly making up 15.17%, leading to overcapacity in existing nursing homes. Current facilities tend to be institutional and fail to optimally respond to the physical, cognitive, and sensory declines of the elderly. Therefore, this project aims to design an inclusive, safe, and independence-supporting Senior Living Community in the peri-urban area of Surakarta. The design method employs an Elderly-Friendly Architecture approach, focusing on Cognitive Support and Sensory Mitigation. Site analysis led to a flat location in the Colomadu area, close to medical facilities. The main result is a design using a cluster system consisting of 9 small, single-story building masses surrounding a central garden to create a non-institutional, homely atmosphere. The cognitive design concept is applied through wheelchair-accessible looping circulation without dead-ends to accommodate the wandering habits of elderly with dementia, supported by intuitive wayfinding. Sensory mitigation is implemented by prioritizing glare-free natural lighting, anti-slip materials, and color coding for clear orientation. In conclusion, this design creates a residential environment that is not only physically safe but also functions as a cognitive and therapeutic aid for the elderly.
