Abstract

Prediabetes is a transitional state of hyperglycemia whose prevalence continues to increase among adolescents, partly influenced by dietary patterns, including magnesium and monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) intake. This study was conducted to examine the correlation between magnesium and MUFA intake and the occurrence of prediabetes among adolescents in Surakarta City. It applied a quantitative observational approach with a cross-sectional design, involving 197 participants aged 15–18 years selected through multistage random sampling and simple random sampling techniques. Information on magnesium and MUFA intake was obtained using the Semi Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (SQ-FFQ), while prediabetes status was assessed based on fasting blood glucose levels measured through the enzymatic colorimetric method (GOD-PAP). Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate methods, with Fisher’s Exact test employed for statistical evaluation. The findings revealed that most respondents had insufficient magnesium and MUFA intake, and several participants were identified as having prediabetes. Bivariate analysis showed that there was no significant correlation between magnesium intake and the incidence of prediabetes, nor between MUFA intake and the incidence of prediabetes among adolescents in Surakarta City.
