Abstract
Introduction: Ankle sprains are common injuries to the musculoskeletal system, often causing imbalance during movement, limited mobility, and discomfort. Among various physiotherapy approaches, joint mobilization shows promise for improving ankle performance, but current scientific evidence provides limited understanding of its effect on movement-related balance. Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine how joint mobilization affects balance during movement in individuals with ankle sprains. Methods: This study used a quantitative research design with a Multiple Single Case Experimental Design (Multiple SCED) with an ABA pattern consisting of three phases: baseline phase (A1), intervention phase (B), and post-intervention phase (A2). The respondents consisted of four students with persistent grade 1 ankle sprains. For two weeks, ankle joint mobilization was administered three times a week. Dynamic balance assessment was performed using the Y Balance Test, Range of Motion (ROM) was evaluated for inversion and eversion movements, and pain intensity was measured using the Numeric Pain Rating Scale (NRS). Data were analyzed descriptively, quantitatively, and visually, focusing on changes in scores throughout each phase of the study. Results: The results of the study show that all respondents demonstrated better dynamic balance during the therapy phase, as evidenced by higher scores on the Y Balance Test. In addition, there was an increase in ROM in inversion and eversion movements, as well as a decrease in pain measurements according to the NRS. The improvements observed during therapy persisted even after the intervention ended. Conclusion: Ankle joint mobilization positively affects dynamic balance, increases ROM, and reduces pain in individuals with ankle sprains. This intervention can be integrated into physical therapy rehabilitation programs.
