Abstract

This study aims to explore the impact of the viral song Die With a Smile on the English learning interest of Generation Z non-native speakers at universities in Surakarta. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, data were collected through interviews and literature review. The findings reveal that the viral song influenced learning interest through four main aspects: emotional engagement with the lyrics, curiosity about vocabulary, increased motivation for informal learning, and reduced anxiety toward English. Song elements such as a catchy melody, meaningful lyrics, uplifting messages, and unique vocal collaboration encouraged vocabulary acquisition, pronunciation practice, and understanding of contextual expressions. Participants’ follow-up learning activities included searching for lyrics and translations, repeated singing, and exploring other English-language media. The results highlight that popular music can serve as an effective and enjoyable language learning tool, particularly when combining emotional involvement with linguistic practice in informal contexts.
