Abstract

This study aims to examine the representation of friendship in the anime Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae o Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai, more commonly known as Anohana. The anime tells the story of a childhood friendship group known as the Super Peace Busters, consisting of Jintan, Menma, Anaru, Yukiatsu, Tsuruko, and Poppo. The series depicts how friendship is a relationship of mutual dependence between individuals who share commonalities. The bond they form falls under the category of a social group within society. This research employs a qualitative approach using Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic analysis method, which consists of three main elements: representamen, object, and interpretant. The representation in this study is analyzed using Stuart Hall’s theory. Data were collected through documentation of selected scenes in Anohana that reflect the meaning of friendship.Through this research, deeper meanings of friendship were identified, such as mutual assistance, care/concern, and honesty. These findings were derived from the narrative conveyed, the interactions between characters, the atmosphere in the depicted events, and DeVito’s theory as the theoretical foundation for understanding friendship.
