Abstract

This study discusses the linguistic impoliteness in 12 Years Slave movie. The objective of this study is to examine the kinds and functions of linguistic impoliteness performed in 12 Years Slave movie. Qualitative descriptive method with content analysis approach is used in this research. This study uses Culpeper's (1996) theory of impoliteness. The Subject of this research was all of the characters in 12 Years Slave movie. The objects of this research were utterances containing linguistic impoliteness. In this study, data collection uses document analysis techniques. To examine the whole data, the researchers applied the Miles, Huberman, & Saldana (2014) approach which were divided into four steps: data collection, data condensation, data display, and drawing conclusion. The finding of this research showed that (1) there were several type of linguistic impoliteness such as bald on record impoliteness, positive impoliteness, negative impoliteness, sarcasm or mock politeness, and withhold impoliteness. (2) this research also found function of linguistic impoliteness, such as affective impoliteness, coercive impoliteness, entertaining impoliteness. So it can be concluded that, as native speakers, all characters have good competent language because they can apply various type and function of linguistic impoliteness.
