Abstract

The ability to think critically in mathematics is the ability needed by every individual to solve problems, formulate conclusions, collect possibilities and make decisions to obtain relevant and responsible knowledge. This study aims to describe and analyze students' critical thinking skills in solving problems of the Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) type on the material of the Two Variable Linear Equation System (SPLDV) eighth grade junior high school. This study uses a qualitative descriptive research method with the research subjects of 8th grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Purwantoro. Data collection techniques in the form of tests, interviews, and documentation. The validity of the data using triangulation of sources and techniques. This is the data analysis stage, the data analysis techniques used are data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results showed that students with low critical thinking skills were able to meet one indicator of critical thinking, namely the indicator of providing simple explanations, students with moderate critical thinking skills were able to meet three indicators of critical thinking skills, namely providing basic explanations, providing further explanations and being able to make conclusions, and students with high-level critical thinking skills have been able to meet the indicators of critical thinking skills, namely giving simple explanations, giving basic explanations, giving further explanations, setting strategies and tactics and providing conclusions.
