Abstract

This research deals with Communication Strategies used by students of Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta who will attend MUIE. MUIE (Malimpa UMS International Expedition) is an international activity from Malimpa which will be held in Ecuador. This research was a qualitative descriptive research with case study approach. The subject of this research was 7 (seven) 2021 Malimpa members who study in Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta in various faculties. The object of this research were 1) knowing the types Communication Strategies, 2) knowing the reason in using Communication Strategies and 3) presenting the dominant Communication Strategies. Technique of collecting data in this research were interview and video recording. This research used Dornyei’s taxonomy of Communication Strategies in analyzing the data. The result of this research showed (1) the types of Communication Strategies used by the learners namely Approximation, Use of Fillers, Appeal for Help, Code Switching, Circumlocution, Literal Translation, Use Non-linguistic, Message Abandonment, Topic Avoidance, Use for all Purpose and Repetition (2) the dominant Communication Strategies used by the learners was Use of Filler by 58.70 % of utterances (3) the reason in using of Communication Strategies were cognitive reason which is divided into the lack of vocabulary, the lack of grammar and the lack of sentence organization and affective reason which divided into nervousness, spontaneous, afraid of making mistake, lack of self-confident and lack of mastery the topic.
