Abstract
This study aims to describe students' mathematical reasoning abilities through the provision of open-ended type questions on number pattern material. This research is a qualitative descriptive study involving 6 students from 27 students of class VIII E at SMP Negeri 2 Klaten who were selected based on 2 high categories, 2 medium categories and 2 low categories. Data collection techniques are through observation, tests and interviews, while data analysis uses data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results showed that students' mathematical reasoning abilities in solving open-ended number pattern content had differences including: 1) High-ability students were able to fulfill the indicators of presenting mathematical statements orally, in writing, pictures and diagrams; make allegations; mathematical manipulation; provide reasons or evidence for the correctness of the solution; check the validity of an argument; find patterns or properties of mathematical phenomena to make generalizations;2) Students with moderate abilities are able to fulfill the indicators of presenting mathematical statements orally, in writing, pictures and diagrams; make allegations; mathematical manipulation; provide reasons or evidence for the correctness of the solution; draw a conclusion; check the validity of an argument 3) Low-ability students are able to meet the indicators of presenting mathematical statements orally, in writing, pictures and diagrams; make allegations; provide reasons or evidence for the correctness of the solution.
