Abstract

The majority of Indonesian students’ thinking ability is low-ranked based on PISA 2015. Indonesian students ranked sixty-third out of seventieth countries around the world. Besides, the government apply National Examination as the highest standard of education in Indonesia. This shows that the research regarding the compatibility level of question items associated to high level of thinking ability needs to be done. The research aims to discover and to analyze the mathematics question items of National Examination 2018 according to HOTS criteria on Bloom’s Taxonomy of cognitive domain. The data collection used in this research is interview method and documentation method. Furthermore, this research is categorized as qualitative-descriptive research. The analysis results show that: 1) Thirty five percent of the question items are not compatible with HOTS criteria. 2) Sixty five percent of the question items are compatible with HOTS criteria. 3) Each question item which is compatible with HOTS criteria has different compatibility levels; the question items having low level or merely meet the criteria up to analyzing are 22,5%; the question items having the medium level or meet the criteria up to analyzing are 25%; and the question items having high level or meet the criteria up to creating are 17,5 %. The results indicates that the majority of mathematics questions of Final Examination for Junior High school in 2018 are compatible with HOTS criteria on Bloom’s Taxonomy of cognitive domain, but they have different compatibility levels.
