Abstract
Every individual has needs that must be met, but sometimes the purchase of goods that is excessive and does not pay attention to its use but only to satisfy satisfaction. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between self-concept and consumer behavior in students. The hypothesis in this study there is a negative relationship between self-concept and consumer behavior in students. The population in this study were UMS Psychology Faculty students from the 2015, 2016 and 2017 class totaling 753 people. The sample in this study were 100 Psychology Faculty students. The sampling technique used is incidental sampling. Data collection method using a quantitative approach and the measuring instrument used in this study is the Self Concept scale and Consumptive Behavior scale. The analytical method used is the product moment correlation technique. Based on the results of data analysis obtained the correlation coefficient of -0.350; significance of p = 0.000 (p<0.01) which indicates that there is a significant negative relationship between self-concept and consumptive behavior. The more positive self-concept in students, the lower the consumer behavior. The level of self-concept in this study is relatively high and the level of consumer behavior is classified as moderate. Effective contribution (SE) of self-concept is 12.3% and there are still 87.7% of other factors that influence consumptive behavior.
