Abstract
The habit of skipping breakfast and the lack of protein intake is potentially will influence the students’ achievement, include the short term memory at school. A short term memory is essential to the process of human memory, it relates to the ability of short term memory, or well-known as working memory, which is a memory system that be a major role in the process of human memory. This research aims to know the correlation between breakfast habit and protein intake towards students’ short term memory in Elementary School in Surakarta. This research is conducted using cross sectional design, the subjects in this research are 74 students choosen by stratified random sampling method. The breakfast habitual data was taken by doing interview with food recall 24 hours method in 7 times, while protein intake was taken by food recall method (6x24 hours) but uncontinously, and the test of short term memory by recall method using words in 2 the morning and afternoon. The results of this study showed 56.8% of students do not usual have breakfast, students with less protein intake as much as 89.2%, and the average of short term memory valuely in the morning or afternoon which is lesser equals to 47,95%. The result of research which is processed with SPSS V.20 shows a significant correlation between breakfast habits and short term memory in the morning and afternoon (p= 0.024; p= 0.001). There was no correlation between protein intake and short termmemory in the morning and afternoon (p= 0.184; p= 0.468). There is a correlation between breakfast habits with short term memory and there is no correlation between protein intake with short term memory. Students are expected to have breakfast at home before going to school or at school before class begins.
