Abstract

The author intends to know and analyze the type of mistakes made by grade VIII students and their causes in solving the story problem of two-variable linear equations system in SMP Negeri 3 Mojolaban. This study aims to describe the mistakes of students of class VIII SMP Negeri 3 Mojolaban in solving the problem story system of linear equations of two variables and analyze the causes factors. The type of this research is qualitative and the method in this research is descriptive research. The subjects of the study were students of class VIII A junior high school 3 Mojolaban academic year 2017/2018 which amounted to 32 students. Data collection techniques in this study are observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis techniques through reducing data, display data and drawing conclusions. The results showed that some mistakes made by students in solving the story problem of two-variable linear equation system: (1) concept error; (2) skill mistakes; (3) troubleshooting mistakes. Factors that cause students to experience errors that students do not understand the concepts in solving the problem of SPLDV story, the student forgot the formula in solving the problem of the SPLDV story, the students are weak in understanding the problem, the students are less skilled in algebraic operations, the students can not manage the time.
