Abstract
This study aims to describe the implementation of democratic education through Pancasila Education instruction at SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Kartasura, examine the challenges faced during this process, and outline the solutions applied to overcome them. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through field observations, in-depth interviews with Pancasila Education teachers, the viceprincipal for Al-Islam and Kemuhammadiyahan affairs, and students, as well as through document analysis. The data were analyzed using an interactive model comprising data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that Pancasila Education plays a pivotal role in implementing democratic values—ranging from understanding equality and non-discrimination to optimizing the teacher's role as a facilitator who encourages independent expression and offers appreciative rewards. Furthermore, democratic values are applied within the school environment through group-based methods that foster tolerance, mutual cooperation (gotong royong), and a national perspective (wawasan nusantara). However, the implementation of democratic education faces challenges, specifically psychologicalparticipatory issues (students remain hesitant to express independent opinions, lack self-confidence, and tend to follow the majority view) and difficulties in habituating values (students still rely on the teacher's final instructions for decision-making). The school and teachers successfully addressed these issues by providing continuous stimulation through Project-Based Learning (PjBL) and case studies on trending issues, expanding habituation practices through the collective creation of "Class Agreements" at the start of the semester, and providing safe avenues for expression, such as a school suggestion box. These instructional activities proved effective in integrating the teacher's role as a role model with student psychological comfort, thereby transforming the abstract values of Pancasila into a vibrant school culture aligned with Al-Islam and Kemuhammadiyahan ethics.
