Abstract

Bearing damage in the final drive is the main cause of decreased performance and reliability of the Komatsu D31P dozer. Bearings function to maintain rotation and withstand loads, so damage directly impacts downtime and increased maintenance costs. This study was conducted through visual inspection, final drive disassembly, and observation of the physical condition of the bearings. Damage was found in the form of cage cracks, raceway wear, and roller deformation triggered by inconsistent lubrication, particle contamination, shock loads, and possible misalignment during installation. Operation in heavy terrain with fluctuating loads and high vibrations also accelerates material fatigue. The results of the study emphasize the importance of preventive maintenance such as routine lubrication, seal replacement, temperature and vibration monitoring, and bearing replacement before reaching the end of its service life to reduce recurrent failures and increase equipment productivity.
