Abstract

The Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) approach was selected as a solution because students' learning motivation was still low due to teacher-centered instruction dominated by the lecture method, resulting in limited student participation. In addition, students' learning achievement remained low, as indicated by the fact that some students had not yet achieved the Minimum Mastery Criterion (KKM). This study aimed to examine the effect of the CTL approach on students' learning motivation and achievement in Islamic Religious Education and Character Education (PAI & BP). The research employed a mixed methods approach with an exploratory sequential design. The first stage used Classroom Action Research (CAR) based on the Kemmis and McTaggart model, conducted in three cycles, while the second stage employed a quasi-experimental design with a nonequivalent control group design. The population consisted of all eighth-grade students at SMP Ta'mirul Islam Surakarta. The research subjects included Class VIII A as the CAR class, Class VIII B as the experimental class, and Class VIII C as the control class, each consisting of 28 students. Data were collected through observation, interviews, documentation, and tests (pre-test and post-test). The data were analyzed using descriptive analysis and the t-test. The results showed that students' learning motivation and achievement improved gradually through the implementation of the CTL approach in each learning cycle. In Cycle I, students began to relate the learning materials to their daily experiences, leading to initial improvements in learning motivation and achievement. In Cycle II, learning activities were developed through discussions, questioning, inquiry, and collaborative learning, resulting in greater student participation. In Cycle III, the CTL approach was implemented more optimally through reflection, problem-solving, and contextual learning activities, enabling students to become more active while further enhancing their learning motivation and achievement. Students' learning achievement increased progressively from an average score of 66.42 in the pre-action stage to 77.85 in Cycle I, 88.21 in Cycle II, and 90.71 in Cycle III. In the experimental stage, the average post-test score of the experimental class (86.07) was higher than that of the control class (79.29). The hypothesis testing indicated that the calculated t-value was greater than the critical t-value, with a significance level of less than 0.05, indicating that the CTL approach had a significant effect on students' learning motivation and achievement. Therefore, the CTL approach proved to be effective in improving students' learning motivation and achievement in Islamic Religious Education and Character Education (PAI & BP) at SMP Ta'mirul Islam Surakarta.
