Abstract
English becomes one of the crucial skills which the vocational students need to have, since it serves as a global communication means which can improve their competitiveness in the worldwide job market. It is especially important for the students of Computer Network Engineering program to master English, since the computer network-related software and applications employ English as their medium of instruction. Therefore, the students need to learn English which is relevant and applicable to their field in order to improve both their English and technical skills. In response to this need, the researcher who served as the student-teacher implemented English for Specific Purposes (ESP)-based materials which connect English with Computer Network Engineering during the PLP Ⅱ (Teaching Internship) at SMK Negeri 2 Surakarta. This research aims at examining the implementation of ESP-based materials by the student-teacher, exploring the perception of mentor teacher toward such implementation, and describe the challenges faced by both the students and student-teacher during such implementation. This research employed a qualitative case study approach with a reflective nature, and involved subjects including 64 students of class Ⅺ TJKT A and Ⅺ TJKT B, mentor teacher, and student-teacher. Data were gathered by a Likert scale-adapted questionnaire, Focus Group Discussion (FGD), interview, and documentation, then were analyzed through thematic analysis. The findings suggested that the ESP-based materials were implemented through aligning such materials with the English needs of students, incorporating examples related to computer and network, and integrating computer and network vocabularies. In addition, the mentor teacher found that the materials were in congruence with the English needs of students, suitable for their grade, good in quality, and able to engage students beside the limitations. Furthermore, students faced challenges including cognitive overload and fast instructional tempo, while student-teacher faced challenges including ESP learning environment management and complex ESP-based materials design. This research concludes that ESP-based materials were successfully implemented by the student-teacher through combining English contents and computer networking elements.
