Abstract

Background: Social media is an application where anyone can create a personal webpage that can connect many people to exchange information and communicate. Social media users are currently dominated by teenagers. Social media gives teenagers a feeling of happiness because they feel they are getting entertainment and as a coping strategy. When teenagers feel academic stress, loneliness, and low self-control, it causes individuals to use social media excessively. Research Objective: To determine and analyze the influence of academic stress, loneliness and self-control on the use of social media among teenagers at SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Gatak. Research Type: Causal associative research using a quantitative approach, namely to determine the influence of academic stress, loneliness and self-control on the use of social media in adolescents. This research uses a cross sectional design, namely collecting data at one time. Data collection in this research used a questionnaire with a Likert scale. The sampling technique used is Stratified Random Sampling. The sample obtained was 64 respondents, then analyzed using a multiple linear regression analysis test via SPSS 23. Results: Based on the results of the analysis, it is known that the multiple linear regression equation is: Y= -3.574 + 0.083 X1 + 0.290 X2 + 0.424 X3 + e. Based on the results of hypothesis testing, academic stress has a significant effect on the use of social media in adolescents with a Sig value of 0.005 < 0.05, loneliness has a significant effect on the use of social media in adolescents with a Sig value of 0.007 < 0.05, and self-control has a significant effect on use of social media in adolescents with a Sig value of 0.000 < 0.05. Conclusion: It can be concluded that the variables of academic stress, loneliness and self-control influence the use of social media in adolescents. Suggestion: For SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Gatak to provide activities according to the interests and talents of the students.
